Press Release: Mobile Startups Make Their Mark

Starting a business in any category is never easy. Those in the mobile industry face their own unique challenges. In June’s MobileMonday Manila (MoMo Manila) held at the German Club in Makati, two startup founders shared their stories.

Ramon Pastor engaged the eighty-plus attendees with his love story. He traced the beginnings of his mobile romance to Nokia and Palm. He spurned Apple’s iOS for several years until he became lovestruck by the App Store. Today, Pastor’s Numlock Solutions has its own apps in the App Store, including Wallet Whiz (which helps you track your spending against a budget) and StreetSmart (the first user-contributed road traffic app for Philippine mobiles). Recently, he branched out into Android development.

Chikka is one of the pioneer brands in the local mobile scene. Chito Bustamante, its co-founder, gave two memorable pieces of advice to the mobile community during his talk: “Build. Build. Build.” and “Upak”. Bustamante found himself in the heart of Silicon Valley during the dotcom boom. Upon returning to the Philippines in the late nineties, he noticed how everyone he passed had their heads bowed, texting. (Back then, “texting” was still a relatively new phenomenon.) This inspired him and his partners to start up Chikka. They coded at work, then they went home and coded some more (thus, “upak” or, roughly translated, “just beat it up”). As a testament to the longevity of their idea, Chikka counts 5 million users today.

MobileMonday Manila’s sponsors include Novare, Out There Media, Lowe Philippines and Technoodling.net. The next gathering of mobile professionals, marketers, developers and enthusiasts is on July 18. Mobile Payments and the community-sourced Mobile Bayani awards are on the agenda.  Stay tuned for more insights and learning from the leaders and makers of the Philippine mobile industry.

More than a voluntary forum for knowledge sharing, MoMo Manila it is also a one-stop networking hub for anyone interested in the mobile space. For sponsorship or attendance inquiries, contact us through http://momomanila.tumblr.com.
